Bully Blues is a one-hour rock opera with 14 original songs composed and written by Dr. John Chapman a musician and composer as well as a veteran high school counselor. The opera is aimed at a teen audience (high school and junior high school) and its purpose is to combat bully behavior in schools. The production is filled with rollicking song and dance numbers and character animation sequences designed to communicate the lessons of compassion and tolerance. It is planned initially as a one-hour public television special with later distribution to schools as a tool to identify and combat bully behavior. The producers of Bully Blues have put together these web pages to provide more information about this project.

During the scripting of Bully Blues, the production team needed a shared vision of how the finished rock opera would look and feel. While the visual descriptions in the script help to illustrate this vision, we needed more to be able to communicate our ideas to a broader audience and to each other. We produced this sample to help crystallize our vision. This is a sample and not meant to be part of the finished rock opera. Casting for the complete production will be different when we get the ball rolling so different people will be cast in these rolls. This sample shows how we will use song and dance to communicate the issues of bully behavior and its effects on the perpetrators and the victims. It illustrates our abilities to communicate meaningful concepts using an entertaining format. The techniques we plan to use for the finished production are included in this sample, including the fast-paced editing, the use of lip-synch for the musical numbers, professionally choreographed dance and character animation sequences. The talents of the production team are showcased in this sample. The song was written by John Chapman, music was produced by Al Weener, our musical director, the dance choreographed by Hannah Leben, our choreographer, the video shot and edited by Jeff Gural, our videographer and editor, the animation created by Hillary Leben, our animator, and the sequence produced and directed by John Leben the producer and director.
